Italy is a predominantly Christian country. More specifically, it is a Roman Catholic country. Roman Catholicism has shaped Italy’s history, and had led to some of the most beautiful religious architecture in the world.
The formation of the modern Italian state began in 1861 with the unification of most of the peninsula under the House of Savoy (Piedmont-Sardinia) into the Kingdom of Italy (including Rome).
