Overview
The Marangu Route requires a minimum of 6 days to complete, with huts instead of tents for trekkers to rest for the night. The route begins in the village which continues West towards Kibo peak. We highly recommend this route to those without prior trekking in altitude experience due to its gradual ascent.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KILIMANJARO
Our representative will meet you at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and take you to Moshi town. You will be briefed on your upcoming trek as well as an equipment check. In case you’re missing any mountain gear, you have the option to rent the equipment needed.
Our primary accommodation will be at the Weru Weru River Lodge with breakfast the next day. Lunch and dinner are not included but you have the option to order at your expense at any restaurant in town.
DAY 2: MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUT
Your trek will begin with you hiking through the dense rainforest, to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.
The total distance is 8.3km which takes 5 – 6 hours to complete. You will be provided with accommodation in the form of a 2-person tent as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 3: MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBO HUT
Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.
The total distance is 12.5km which takes 8 – 9 hours to complete. You will be provided with accommodation in the form of a 2-person tent as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 4: ACCLIMATIZATION TREK TO ZEBRA ROCKS THEN BACK TO HOROMBO HUT
After a relaxing breakfast, a trek follows to the Zebra Rocks (distinctive black and white stripes giving the rock formation its name). On your return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you. You can relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the hike the following day.
The total distance is 5km which takes 4 – 5 hours to complete. You will be provided with accommodation in the form of a 2-person tent as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT TO KIBO HUT
The trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the “saddle”. This plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. The destination will be the Kibo Hut where you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.
The total distance is 9.5km which takes 7 – 8 hours to complete. You will be provided with accommodation in the form of a 2-person tent as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 6: KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK & DOWN TO HOROMBO HUT
You will begin your final ascent around midnight, passing the Hans Meyer Cave (5220m) then the climb slowly goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro, where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have a further hike for 1 – 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m). On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2 hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.
The total distance is 22km which takes 12 – 15 hours to complete. You will be provided with accommodation in the form of a 2-person tent as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 7: HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE
The last hike passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch will be provided. You will once again pass the tropical rainforest back to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). You will be taken back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your success on reaching the mountain summit.
The total distance is 20.8km which takes 7 – 8 hours to complete. You will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
DAY 8: DEPART KILIMANJARO
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight. Depending on the time of the flight, you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport.
